The value of socially responsible small business

At Denver’s Local Capital Summit, the keynote began the day with a challenge: “where you get your money matters.” Many of us remember Plough and Hearth and other small garden supply companies. Three mentioned by Will got funding that resulted in their purchase to public companies. One is now gone and the mission statements of the others have changed significantly to something unrecognizable from their original set of values.
My personal lesson, my take-away is that slower, or deliberate growth is sustainable growth. Rather than sell the heart of our business, working steadily toward funding and sales that sustain our company, gives us more control over the direction of the company.
